Just since 2008 when I moved here, the East Village transformed from warehouses to a destination to go to, Downtown became vibrant, and an influx of transplants brought music festivals, art shows and international foods and has created an amazing place that I am proud to call home.
Jacob Repp calls Ankeny, a fast growing suburb on the north side of DSM, home, but he works in West Des Moines, also a fast growing suburb, but on the west side of DSM. But the beauty of DSM? The average commute is only 20 minutes, which means getting from work to home and back again (or to any other points of destination for fun) is easy.
For fun, Jacob says you can't beat all the music and food festivals in the summer. DSM shine with events like 80/35, Hinterland and community-driven music events like the Clive Greenbelt Music Festival, Ankeny Summerfest, Bondu Blues and Brews and numerous others. On any given given weekend, DSM-ers can treat their taste buds to a food experience like World Food & Music Festival, Adel Sweet Corn Festival, CelebrAsian, Latino Heritage Festival, Taste of the Junction Multicultural Festival and the Des Moines Metro Opera's Wine, Food & Beer, just to name a few.
The restaurant scene is just as vibrant. Jacob's favorites include lunch at Lucca in the Historic East Village and the Eatery A patio on Ingersoll Avenue, both in the city of Des Moines.
