Finding Art and Culture in Greater Des Moines

For Sandrah Nasimiyu, Greater Des Moines (DSM) has always been more than just a place to live, it’s a home base. Born in Kenya, she arrived in Iowa as a child when her mother won the visa lottery. A chance connection led them to DSM where her family planted roots and built a life.

Growing up in Iowa, Sandrah witnessed firsthand the strength and resilience of her parents, who navigated significant cultural and professional transitions to build a life in DSM. Her mother, once a geography teacher in Kenya, started over as a waitress before building a successful African art business, which now supports 60 artists across 10 African countries.

These experiences not only shaped Sandrah’s creativity and drive but also deepened her connection to DSM, where she channels her passions into her work and community.

“I knew if there was any place I wanted to start to build who I am, it was going to have to be the place I felt most comfortable,” she said.

Today, Sandrah is deeply invested in DSM’s vibrant art and culture, sharing its story with others during her travels. Although she has lived in London and traveled extensively, she always finds herself drawn back to DSM. Through her business, Nasimiyu Studios, she merges creativity and community by partnering with local organizations on marketing and event planning. Her dedication to the city’s arts scene extends to Art Noir, a member group of the Des Moines Art Center, where she serves as co-marketing chair and helps organize events that connect people to the city’s thriving culture.

“You can quite literally build a community anywhere,” Sandrah said. “But there’s so many people and things I feel like are unfinished here, and spaces that I still want to be a part of.”

When asked what she loves most about Des Moines, Sandrah points to the city’s hidden gems and opportunities for connection.

“I think everyone should experience DSM,” she said. “There are so many hidden gems. Until you actually do the exploration to find the things you love, you won’t see it.”

From playing tennis with friends to attending events like Subtle Sound Wave, a music series featuring African and global beats, Sandrah has found ways to make the city her own.

Sandrah’s story is a testament to the power of resilience and connection. Her love for DSM isn’t just about what the city offers but also about the community she’s built and the opportunities she’s creating for others.

“Des Moines isn’t just where I ended up,” she said. “It’s where I belong.”
